Please join us at 5 pm on Tuesday, May 12 at the Gunnison Library for a book club with the League of Women Voters of Gunnison Valley. We will discuss the book How to Raise a Citizen (And Why It’s Up to You to Do It) by Lindsey Cormack. Refreshments served at 5 pm, discussion begins at 5:30 pm, and special appearance via Zoom by the author at 6 pm. You can join us in person or virtually here: Zoom Link for LWV Book Club. About the book: An essential guide to nurturing the next generation of responsible, informed citizens. Lindsey Cormack’s book, How to Raise a Citizen (And Why It’s Up to You to Do It), speaks directly to an America in which civic knowledge is alarmingly sparse and many people dread politics. It’s a tool for parents, educators, and anyone eager to fill this gap. In the book, Cormack offers an engaging and practical approach to discussing political issues and the inner workings of the U.S. government with children. She explains why our schools can no longer be the sites of civic education that they used to be and provides parents with strategies and necessary know-how to be able to impart these lessons to their children. From the intricacies of the voting process to the foundational principles of democracy and the significance of key government documents like the Constitution, the author demystifies complex topics with clarity and insight. About the League of Women Voters: The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, grass-roots, political organization founded in 1920 by the women who fought and won the right of women to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. As members, we believe that our government depends upon informed and active participation in the political process. The local chapter in the Gunnison Valley has been promoting voting rights and civic engagement for over 40 years. Membership is open to everyone! Copies of the book are available to check out at the library, as well as audio and e-book options via Hoopla. Click here for the event website |
