Crested Butte Film Festival, CB State of Mind, and the Center for Mental Health are excited to present two thrilling outdoor adventure films that also show the dark side of the sport's obsessive and addictive tendencies. "Learning To Drown" - directed by Colorado filmmaker and CBFF favorite, Ben Knight. Considered one of the most influential action sports athletes in the world, snowboarder Jess Kimura was at the top of her game when tragedy struck. As everything came crashing down, her grief led her down a path she could have never imagined. "The River Runner" - directed by Rush Sturges. The River Runner follows legendary kayaker Scott Lindgren’s 20-year quest to be the first person to paddle the four great rivers that originate from Tibet’s sacred Mount Kailash. The film is not simply a jaw-dropping adventure, but also an intimate portrait of Lindgren as he navigates the terrifying terrain of trauma, addiction, and a life-threatening brain tumor. As a result of a rough upbringing, Lindgren forbade any sign of emotional vulnerability which fueled his obsession and subsequent success in paddling the world’s most dangerous whitewater. Both films take an honest look at adventure culture and what is lost when outdoor pursuits take precedence over emotional well-being. When these athletes' demons finally scratch their way to the surface, each comes to recognize that to achieve their goals, they each must reckon with their own definitions of strength. These films are unrated. Running time 126 mins. Join us for a panel discussion between the films with filmmaker, Ben Knight, along with local mental health professionals. The films are free. Donations are welcome. Click here for the event website |
