THE APOLLO Based on New York's legendary theater, The Apollo, chronicles the unique history and contemporary legacy of the famed Harlem theater. Over the last 85 years, what began as a refuge for marginalized artists has emerged as a hallowed hall of black excellence and empowerment -- especially recently when the theater mounted a theatrical production of Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between The World And Me. The film weaves together archival clips of music, comedy and dance performances featuring such legendary talents as Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Richard Pryor and Lauryn Hill. Director Roger Ross Williams, explores not only the struggle of black lives in America, but the role that theater and art play in that struggle. The film is an essential view into the life and history of black performers where music and art "provided a avenue out of the legacy of slavery." The film plays for one week, Feb. 19 - 25. Tickets are $15 or $25 together with Best of CBFF: Narrative Shorts.
