The Gaze March 29 – 31. Doors 7:00, Curtain 7:30 pm. "The Gaze" combines dance, theatre, and spoken word to express the issues that arise when women are gazed upon as objects. As an audience member, the power to create change lies within your gaze. The gaze is the act of seeing and of being seen. Critical theory examines underlying power structures within the act of seeing that establishes a hierarchy of power in which the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze. Feminist studies recognize a sexual imbalance in which the male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure. Women are thus oppressed into mere objects of male desire. This is the world we live in everyday, though we do not always see it. Without recognition, there is no hope for change. "I always feel like somebody's watching me" - Rockwell.
