Details: A Good Neighbor: Environmental racism in a Denver neighborhood A Good Neighbor is a feature-length documentary about a Latina single mother’s fight against racism and climate change as she campaigns for city council in one of the nation’s most polluted zip codes. 52 minutes Created by Professional skier and POW Athlete Alliance member Amie Engerbretson, The Hypocrite challenges the notion that athletes are hypocrites because they burn fossil foils by driving snowmobiles, skiing via helicopters, and chasing fresh snow around the world – all while advocating for the climate. This film showcases the realization that individual actions are not the core issue and that significant systemic shifts are needed to shape a different future. By dismantling the culture of individual blame that leads to guilt, the documentary encourages unity and collaboration among individuals who share a common passion for the outdoors and for the protection of their playgrounds. 27 minutes. These films shed light on the complexities between individuals, the government, and multinational corporations in the middle of a climate crisis - and what we can do about it. These two films are very thought-provoking and help us tackle 3 central questions: ? Who is to blame for fossil fuel emissions and toxic pollutants? ? Who bears the brunt of climate change and other dangerous effects of these emissions? ? What do we do about it? MISPLACED BLAME - Are we hypocrites when we engage in lifestyles that add carbon and other fossil fuel emissions to our atmosphere? Or has the guilt been misdirected to the individual? Do we accept that responsibility? We consumers often get the impression that this is all our fault. Does 250 years of industrialization make today's individuals guilty? The Hypocrite addresses these issues via intimate and candid conversations. SOCIAL INEQUALITY - A Good Neighbor makes it poignantly clear that disadvantaged groups suffer disproportionately from the adverse effects of fossil fuel emissions. To compound things, this results in greater subsequent inequality. All too often our government and multinational corporations don't seem to care if disadvantaged people (who create the least pollution) pay the largest price with unnecessary illnesses in their families, even resulting in death. Is it fair for corporations to refuse to mitigate their own emissions? Is it fair for underprivileged people to excessively pay these external costs? PULLING THESE LOOSE ENDS TOGETHER: GVC3 THOUGHTS ON WHAT WE CAN DO. Whether we are privileged or not, it is not the individual who has the greatest impact on climate change and toxic emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. It is the electrical generation/oil and gas companies, governmental entities and multinational corporations who can affect the SCALE of change we need. These entities can be slow or simply refuse to act at the necessary scale. This is especially ironic because today we have the technology to economically turn the climate crisis around. So then what is the responsibility of the individual? Individual Responsibility Today: Our first responsibility is to do everything we can to induce large corporations and governmental entities to act. We must continually compel energy providers to supply us with high percentages of renewable electricity. We must influence our government to legislate and incentivise multinational corporations to slash emissions. We need to continue to green the grid and electrify everything: including our homes, buildings, appliances and transportation. This is the most economical and practical means to reach net zero by 2050 to stabilize our climate.
