Date: September 2
Continues Until:
Location: Online/Zoom
Details: Book Talk This fun online book discussion group meets on zoom every first Thursday of the month, September through June. All are welcome. Participants do not have to attend every time, but can choose the books they are interested in. The group will meet in person, socially at the Gunnison Arts Center several times a year. Questions can be sent to gacbooktalk@gmail.com. Upcoming books: September 2 Caste: the Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson led by Ellen Examines the unspoken caste system that has shaped America and shows how our lives are still defined by a hierarchy of human divisions. October 7 The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferrante led by Sage Fourteen-year-old Giovanna transitions from childhood to adulthood in two cities: Naples of the heights, which wears a mask of refinement, and Naples of the depths, a place of excess and vulgarity, where her guide is the unforgettable Aunt Vittoria. November 4 The Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende led by Pat Roser, a pregnant young widow fleeing the Spanish Civil War, finds her life intertwined with that of Victor Dalmau, an army doctor and the brother of her deceased love. In order to survive, the two must unite in a marriage neither of them desires. December 2 Eat the Buddha by Barbara Demick led by Narcissa Spanning decades of modern Tibetan and Chinese history, as told through the private lives of citizens who all face the same dilemma: Do they resist the Chinese, or join them? Do they adhere to Buddhist teachings of compassion and nonviolence, or do they fight?
