During the week of March 19 - 25, join Crested Butte Film Festival online for two films. First up, is "Bacurau", a blistering social commentary and a thrilling, genre-film ride from the highlands of Brazil; then "Life in A Day", a unique documentary comprised of video segments taken around the world on a single day. Imagine the fantastical elements of a Gabriel García Márquez novel set in the highlands of Brazil and you're close to imagining what happens in the rollicking, genre-bending world of "Bacurau." Brazil's nomination to the upcoming Academy Awards, "Barurau" was a box office sensation and seen by over one million people there. In true Márquezian fashion, the film begins with the death of the village matriarch, and once the Feminine dies, things quickly go to hell: flying saucers, a stampede of horses, and a dangerous group of Westerners muddy the river. Formally thrilling and narratively daring, "Bacurau" draws on modern Brazilian sociopolitical and historical concerns to deliver a hard-hitting, anti-colonialist drama (from the perspective of those colonized). The film stars Brazilian acting legend Sonia Braga and received the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is Rated R and is 120 minutes long. Tickets are $15, available at cbfilmfest.org/yearround-films "A perfect blend of blistering social commentary and illicit genre-flick thrills. It's one crazy ride." Rolling Stone "A modern-day western with the raw power of a Sergio Leone epic." Los Angeles Times Join CBFF Programming Director Michael Brody and Festival Host Jack Hanley for a recorded talkback after the film. "Life in A Day" (free screening) is the sequel to the popular 2010 film of the same name. Like its predecessor, this unique documentary is comprised of a wide array of video clips taken around the world on one day: July 25, 2020 (you were probably wearing a mask). "Life in a Day" premiered at Sundance and is now available to view online. YouTube produced this film and received nearly 250,000 submissions from around the world. Director Kevin Macdonald, along with producer, Ridley Scott, have edited thousands of hours of footage to a sleek ninety minutes, that take viewers on an astonishing trip around the world. "Life In A Day" offers a fascinating glimpse into what humanity was doing that day: playing, praying, living and dying, and at its end, what it achieves is truly remarkable: a powerful statement about human life on the planet (in the midst of a pandemic) that will make viewers want to join along in the spiritual expressions of those on Earth and hopefully make us feel grateful for the life we each get to live on it.
