In case your travels haven't taken you to a big city lately, Crested Butte Film Festival puts you on the streets of Oakland, California, May 22nd with the screening of its monthly film, Blindspotting. The film (written by and starring Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal of Hamilton fame) is set in a racially-divided, rapidly gentrifying city where longtime residents of color are being pushed out by hipster, well-paid, whites. In this mix, in this trendiest of Bay cities, conflict, tension, police shootings, and humor also abound. Blindspotting centers on homie best friends Collin and his fast-talking childhood bestie, Miles (Diggs and Casal, respectively) and the final three days of Collin’s probation as he tries to put his infamous arrest and criminal past behind him. But it is Miles’ recklessness and bravado that threaten to land him back in trouble. His bond with his volatile best friend soon gets tested when Collin witness a white police officer shoot a black man during a chase through the streets. and the Bay boys are set on a spiraling collision course with each other. Exploding with energy, style, and raw emotion, Blindspotting unravels today’s intersection of race and class with urgent and poetic justice. As Peter DeBruge wrote in Variety, "This is a film to open America's eyes." Come see this funny, incendiary take on modern American city life. As a character in the film implores, "You don't have to act ghetto to hang out here..." but you do have to care about the fate of our fellow Americans and our cities and see this important, necessary film. A talkback with festival director Michael Brody will take place after the film. Blindspotting is directed by Carlos López Estrada and also stars Janina Gavankar. The film is Rated R and runs 95 minutes. Tickets are $12 and are available at cbfilmfest.org, The Center for the Arts, and at the door. Showtime is 7pm on May 22nd. On June 20th, Crested Butte Film Festival presents Volume 6 of the brand new, International Ocean Film Tour. Showtime is 7pm and tickets are $15. The 9th annual Crested Butte Film Festival brings 90 films and 30 filmmakers to town, September 26 - 29. Passes and information are at cbfilmfest.org Click here for the event website |
