Join us for the 135th anniversary of the Jokerville Mine Disaster, the greatest mining tragedy to occur in our valley. Local historian Larry McDonald has uncovered many mysteries about the event, and details about some of the victims and their lives, which are included in a historical pictorial book he recently completed. Which victim was a convicted killer working under an assumed name? Why were boys as young as 12 working in the mine? Was the miner told not to enter the gas-filled chamber, and subsequently accused of igniting the explosion, really deaf? If you are interested in learning about this important local historical event, and would like to honor the men and boys who perished on that frigid morning in 1884, please join us at the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum at 4th and Elk on Thursday, January 24th from 6-7:30pm. Free admission, donations are greatly appreciated. Click here for the event website |
