The Princess Curtain Unveiling
Add to your calendar
Date: June 20, 6:30 pm-8:30pm
Continues Until:
Location: 331 Elk Ave., Crested Butte, CO 81224
Details: Join the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum for the Princess Curtain unveiling and exhibit opening. On June 20th, at 6:30 pm, the Museum invites you to a free viewing of this year’s exhibit, Dropping Out: Crested Butte in the 1970s. Wine and beer will be served as visitors tour the exhibit followed by a presentation by Princess Curtain artist, Ken Wolverton at 7pm. Crested Butte in the 1970s laid the framework for the community we know today. In this decade, there was an explosion of creativity, proliferation of new activities and sports, and a political takeover. This was a riotous time, establishing some of our most loved traditions and community character. Many of you will fondly remember The Princess Curtain from Steve Glazer's Princess Theater. The curtain was commissioned by Glazer from Telluride artist Kenneth Wolverton in 1973. The hand painted curtain is loosely based on Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, featuring a nude woman standing in a half shell in front of a detailed depiction of Crested Butte Mountain. Wolverton has made a career of restoring theater curtains and painting murals across the world. He will give a presentation about his time painting The Princess Curtain in Crested Butte, the restoration of the Telluride Opera House curtain, and discuss the significance of Colorado in the 1970s for the arts community. This is a free event, donations greatly appreciated.
