 The Black Lilies flaunt a rootsy flair, mixing folk, honky-tonk country, soul, blues, gospel and rump-shaking Southern rock into a winsome hybrid traditional enough to appeal to an Opry crowd and expansive enough to ensnare a broader audience. With one foot planted firmly in Appalachian music culture, their songs are earthy and gritty with a spirit that seems to have been carved out of the planks of an abandoned backwoods cabin. Named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need to Know,” their four albums have cumulatively earned a host of accolades including Independent Music Awards for “Vox Populi Best Album, Americana” and “Best Story Song;” three Grammy nominations; and have held top five spots on Americana Music Association’s radio charts. They’ve played MerleFest, NPR’s Mountain Stage, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Bonnaroo, SXSW, the Four Corners Folk Festival and more. The Black Lilies are Cruz Contreras (piano, acoustic and electric guitar), Dustin Schaefer (electric guitar), Sam Quinn (bass) and Bowman Townsend (drums).
