 The Keys to the Treasure Chest – Learning the Secrets of Verse ?Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. August 22 – September 12. Why are poets so obsessed with writing in lines, how is that different from writing prose, and why does it matter? The purpose of this four-week class is not only to answer these questions (that's just the beginning), but also to begin to understand the actual techniques poets writing in English use, the what and how and why of these techniques. We will at least touch on all the major kinds of meter and free verse in English, from the dawn of the language to the present. We will look at things historically, but also read poems in all the forms (again, including free verse) and practice them ourselves. We will laugh. We will cry. And, in the end, I hope your appetite for the study and practice of verse form, the mother sauce of poetry, will be whetted. Instructor: David J. Rothman. $80/student, $68/members.
